The BrainPad has a new face!

By now you are familiar with the now famous NETMF educational board, the BrainPad. For the last several months the BrainPad has been used by several institutions and we have been busy collecting their feedback and getting their opinions. We diligently sifted through all of the amazing feedback and suggestions, which has led to the new and improved BrainPad. I know what you are thinking, "How could the BrainPad get any better?" Well let me tell you!

First, we updated the firmware so that the BrainPad can be powered and programmed through the on-board USB connection, making it ideal for use with Scratch. Second, the BrainPad now officially supports Click Boards™ from MikroElektronika. If you haven't checked recently, MikroElektronika has over 150 available Click Boards™ today with many more on the way!

And if you aren't sitting down then you should! We are now bringing the BrainPad to a new platform...(drum roll please)... The BrainPad is now available for the Arduino community. Yes, you read that correctly, Arduino is now a supported platform for the BrainPad family of educational products. The BrainPad Duino will be available for purchase in December, just in time for the holidays.

We would also like to mention that recently GHI Electronics and MikroElektronika, have been discussing our passion for educating the next generation of makers. If you have had your head buried in work and you are not familiar with MikroElektronika, they are a renowned producer of development tools for various microcontroller architectures. Now I can't quite spill the beans on these discussions but if I were you, I would stay tuned for some upcoming announcements!

We would like to give a quick "Thank you" to every teacher, student, contributor and to the community for their feedback and contributions.

Release of the G30 Development Board!

Today we are excited to announce the official release of the G30 Development Board. The G30 Development Board is the official development system from GHI Electronics for the G30 System on Chip. This development system exposes the various peripherals and interfaces that make it ideal for any .NET Micro Framework project. It is available to purchase today and will begin to ship next week.

The Software Development Kit (SDK) will get you started in no time. All you need is a PC with Visual Studio and the .NET Micro Framework SDK from Microsoft. You simply follow the steps listed here to get started in minutes. The system can be powered through USB or by connecting a power pack (not included).

BrainPad makes it's debut at YouthSpark!

Both GHI Electronics and Microsoft have a passion for education and empowering today's youth with the tools necessary to create tomorrows technology. With a strong passion for education, on November 5th, 2015, GHI Electronics and the BrainPad will make it's first debut at a Microsoft YouthSpark event right here in Michigan. And what a debut it will be! We are taking 150 of the brightest students in the Metro Detroit area and teaching them coding fundamentals using the BrainPad and Scratch for .NET Micro Framework.

What is Scratch for .NET Micro Framework? Scratch for .Net Micro Framework is free software that allows you to use the MIT Scratch programming environment with .Net Micro Framework micro-controller boards and peripherals. This awesome software was created by Martin Calsyn and given to the community because of his belief in educating tomorrow's engineers today!

The BrainPad was designed as a powerful educational tool that can be used to teach everyone from kids, to college students and professionals. Kids will start to learn programming using Scratch and the moving onto learning Visual Studio, one of the most widely used professional tools.

Mountable 7” and 4.3” Displays for your next NETMF project!

The recently announced Display NHVN Module works with multiple 4.3" and 7" displays from New Haven. The 4.3" display drops in perfectly. With simple 2 way tape, it can be mounted to match the Display T43 Module.

The 7" display can also be made mountable. The Holey Board fits perfectly behind the 7" display, exposing mounting holes on the sides. The Display NHVN Module can then be mounted directly onto the Holey Board.

With many optional capacitive touch displays, Gadgeteer and NETMF users now have a set of professional yet reasonably-priced display options for their next project!

Saying goodbye to an old friend...FEZ Hydra

Born in 2012, the FEZ Hydra was the most powerful, EAGLE designed, OSHW open source, GCC capable, NETMF board. Selling at near cost, it is a great way to dig into the porting kit and start learning the internals of NETMF. Unfortunately, NETMF 4.3 is where the road ends for the beloved FEZ Hydra. With great respect, we have to say goodbye.

However, we can't just say goodbye, we have to say goodbye in true nerd fashion! We are gathering ideas for a retirement celebration for our old friend. Maybe create a last time buy special edition? Maybe a FEZ Hydra contest? We are sure that you will have many ideas on how we can do this.

Please note, although the FEZ Hydra is retiring, the three-headed beast can be resurrected using the GCC compiling instructions found below.

Introducing a breadboard-friendly line of NETMF offers!

We understand that through-hole designs are still needed. We also know how valuable breadboard-friendly products can be. Today, we are announcing 4 new products for NETMF with a through-hole footprint!

Key design goals of these devices are:
  • Bread-board friendly.
  • Most signals from the core are exposed on 0.1" single row headers.
  • All signals are labeled right on the board, for easier connections.
  • Contains everything to run. Only requires a 3.3V power source, even if a USB cable is being used.
  • Includes the RTC crystal and circuitry.
  • Micro USB connection for easier prototyping but USB signals are still exposed.
  • GXP-compatible connections for devices with TFT display support.

Having the GXP-compatible connection allows for easier connections to displays. For example, the GXP Gadgeteer bridge can be used to connect any Gadgeteer display to any TH board with GXP connections.

Finally, the new TH line of products replaces all older HDR products. All current HDR products will continue to be offered until the end of 2015. We highly recommend the switch to the new TH product line. For those who bought the recent G30HDR, no need to worry this board will be continued to be software supported for the next several years as it is based on the G30 SoC.

New capacitive touch display options!

Today, we are bringing 7 new display options to Gadgeteer and GXP-compatible mainboards. The Display NHVN Module provides an easy way to connect select New Haven displays, either using the gadgeteer sockets, or by using the GXP connections.

The GXP (general expansion port) standard was created by GHI Electronics to standardize the display connection on a 40 pin 0.1" spaced header.

The Display NHVN module is compatible with any Gadgeteer mainboard with RGB sockets and also works with any board with a GXP-compatible connection. The Related Products tab on the product page contains a list of some of the GXP ready devices.

Release of the G400 Development Board!

Today we are excited to announce the official release of the G400 Development Board. The G400 Development Board is the official development system from GHI Electronics for the G400D and G400S System on Modules. The G400 offers high performance and extensive capabilities. This development system exposes the various peripherals and interfaces that make it an ideal for any .NET Micro Framework project.

The G400S and G400D SoMs both run the exact same software. The main difference between the two products is that G400D comes in a DIMM package and the G400S comes in a surface mount package. Using the same firmware allows us to focus better on adding features and improving the quality of the software.
